Small frames, shared stories

This exhibition presents a collection of miniature photographs produced by students studying abroad in Florence, Italy. Measuring only 6×6 centimeters, the works challenge conventional relationships, scale, attention, and spectatorship. Through the accumulation of individual observers, the exhibition assembles a collective visual record that considers how place is experienced, interpreted, and represented.

The exhibition involves themes of light and darkness, love and grief, the relationship between nature and architecture, and the cultural ramifications of tourism. Rather than treating Florence as a stable subject, photographs approach the city as a site of layered histories, competing narratives, and personal encounters. The works examine how movement through urban space shapes perception and how acts of looking produce meaning.

Selected photographs are presented alongside original prose, fiction, and poetry. The juxtaposition of image and text foregrounds the processes through which experience is translated into representation. Together, these forms reveal subjective nature of memory, observation, and narrative, while opening multiple points of entry into student’s encounters with the city.

By privileging small-scale images and collective authorship, Tiny Florence proposes an alternative framework for viewing Florence, one grounded in attention rather than spectacle. This exhibition invites viewers to consider how individual acts of seeing contribute to broader understanding of place and how seemingly minor movements can illuminate the complex relationships between memory, identity, and the built environment.
